eBay began 2026 with a stable buyer base and much stronger marketplace activity. In the first quarter, the company reported 136 million active buyers, $22.2 billion in gross merchandise volume (GMV), $3.1 billion in revenue and approximately 2.5 billion live listings.
The important story is not explosive audience growth. Active buyer accounts increased only modestly, while revenue and GMV rose at double-digit rates. That points to a mature marketplace generating more activity from a large existing audience, helped by stronger U.S. volume, advertising, recommerce and enthusiast categories.
This guide uses the latest company-reported information available in July 2026. Quarterly figures refer to Q1 2026, while the newest complete annual figures refer to full-year 2025. Survey findings are clearly identified and are not presented as marketplace totals.

What Changed at eBay in Q1 2026?
Between Q1 2025 and Q1 2026, eBay’s active buyer accounts increased from 134 million to 136 million. Over the same period, revenue rose from $2.585 billion to $3.089 billion, while GMV climbed from $18.753 billion to $22.197 billion.
This gap matters. It shows that the quarter’s growth did not come mainly from a sudden surge in registered shoppers. Marketplace activity grew much faster than the buyer count. That may reflect higher transaction value, stronger category performance, advertising growth, geographic mix and the contribution of acquired platforms. It does not prove that every individual buyer spent more.

How Many Active Buyers Does eBay Have?
eBay reported 136 million active buyers in Q1 2026, up from 134 million a year earlier. The quarterly series was unusually steady through most of 2025: 134 million in Q1, Q2 and Q3, followed by 135 million in Q4 and 136 million in Q1 2026.
eBay defines an active buyer as an account that paid for at least one transaction on its marketplace platforms during the previous 12 months. The company also warns that one person may hold more than one account. The figure should therefore be described as active buyer accounts, not as 136 million confirmed unique individuals.
Excluding Tise, which eBay acquired in October 2025, the company reported 135 million active buyers. This is a useful distinction because it shows that eBay’s core buyer base remained broadly stable even after separating the acquired platform.

eBay Revenue and Advertising Statistics
eBay generated $3.089 billion in Q1 2026 revenue, an increase of 19% as reported and 17% on a foreign-exchange-neutral basis. For full-year 2025, revenue reached $11.1 billion, up 8% as reported.
Revenue is not the value of all products sold through eBay. It is the amount eBay records from its marketplace and related services, including transaction fees, advertising, payments-related services and seller tools.
Advertising is now a meaningful part of that model. eBay’s advertising offerings produced $581 million in Q1 2026, equal to 2.6% of GMV. First-party advertising, which includes Promoted Listings and first-party display ads, generated $555 million and grew 33% as reported.
For shoppers, paid placement should not be confused with product quality or the best total price. A promoted result may be relevant, but buyers should still compare condition, seller feedback, delivery cost and return terms.
eBay GMV and Mobile Shopping Statistics
eBay reported $22.197 billion in Q1 2026 GMV, compared with $18.753 billion in Q1 2025. U.S. GMV reached $11.503 billion and grew 27%, while international GMV reached $10.694 billion and grew 10%.
GMV means gross merchandise volume: the value of paid transactions on eBay’s marketplace during the period. eBay includes shipping fees and taxes and does not adjust the figure for returns or cancellations. GMV is therefore a measure of marketplace activity, not money that eBay keeps as revenue.
Mobile devices accounted for $15 billion of Q1 2026 GMV. Using eBay’s rounded Fast Facts figures, that is approximately 68% of total quarterly GMV. Because both inputs are rounded, the percentage should be presented as an estimate rather than an exact share.

How Many Listings Are on eBay?
eBay reported approximately 2.5 billion live listings as of March 31, 2026. This is one of the platform’s most useful statistics, but it is easy to misread.
The figure is a snapshot of active listings. It does not mean that 2.5 billion products were sold, that every listing represents a unique product or that every listing is equally trustworthy. The same product may appear in many conditions, quantities, regions and seller offers.
For shoppers, the advantage is inventory depth: new, used, open-box, refurbished, collectible, vintage, discontinued and parts-only products can appear side by side. The trade-off is more work. Buyers need to compare the final delivered price, condition notes, return policy, seller history and product compatibility.
Which Parts of eBay Are Growing?
eBay describes its current priorities around focus categories, consumer-to-consumer selling, recommerce and enthusiast shopping. Its Q1 2026 update highlighted collectibles, fashion resale, eBay Live and tools designed to make specialist products easier to list and evaluate.
Collectibles and trading cards
eBay said its AI-powered card-scanning feature surpassed 30 million cumulative scans. The tool uses a photo to surface historical price and population information. For collectors, that reinforces the importance of sold-price data, grading, condition and authenticity rather than relying only on an asking price.
Recommerce and pre-owned goods
eBay’s 2025 Recommerce Report surveyed more than 27,000 consumers and sellers. Among the surveyed consumers, 89% expected to spend the same amount or more on pre-loved goods, and 81% cited saving money as a reason for buying secondhand. These are survey findings, not eBay marketplace sales totals, but they help explain why used, refurbished and hard-to-find inventory remains central to the platform.
Refurbished and authenticated products
The official eBay Refurbished program uses defined condition grades and qualified sellers. Eligible products include a one- or two-year Allstate-serviced warranty, depending on the grade. That program should not be treated as identical to every listing described by an individual seller as refurbished.
Authenticity Guarantee also applies only to eligible listings and categories. Availability, thresholds and delivery rules can vary by market, so buyers should look for the program badge and read the conditions on the specific listing.
Small-business sellers
In its 2025 Impact Report, eBay said small businesses accounted for approximately 70% of total sales GMV across the United States, United Kingdom and Germany, its three highest-demand markets. This shows how heavily eBay’s inventory still depends on independent and professional sellers rather than a single centralized retail catalog.
What These Statistics Mean for Shoppers and Sellers
For shoppers
Compare the delivered price. Shipping, import charges and returns can erase an apparent discount.
Read the full condition note. “Used,” “open box” and official eBay Refurbished are not interchangeable.
Use sold listings for specialist products. Asking prices can be unrealistic, particularly for collectibles.
Check recent seller feedback. A lifetime score can hide recent packaging, delivery or description problems.
Verify program eligibility. Warranty and authentication rules vary by category, item value and country.
For sellers
A large audience does not remove competition. With roughly 2.5 billion live listings, clear titles, accurate specifics and strong photography matter.
Mobile readability matters. A substantial share of GMV occurs on mobile devices, so key condition and compatibility details should appear early.
Advertising can buy visibility, not trust. Promoted placement works best when the underlying price, feedback and listing quality are competitive.
Specialist knowledge creates an edge. Fitment data, grading details, model numbers and transparent condition notes can reduce buyer uncertainty.
